LET’S BUILD SOMETHING

THE INTENTION
A PERSONAL BUILD
1975 DATSUN
280Z / S30
01 / THE BEGINNING

Some of my earliest memories of a car are from the passenger seat of my mom’s red 240Z in Hawaii.

I wanted the build to be a lesson. I wanted it to be a process of growth and discovery. I wanted to be challenged by it.

Weathered front fender of the Z
One of the first—and last—drives I took before pulling the car apart.
Ripley on stands in the garage
This car felt like a blank canvas.
02 / LEARNING

I wanted to learn the car from the inside out and feel connected to the decisions, the mistakes, the fixes, and the small victories.

A finished car would have skipped too many of the chapters I was most interested in reading.

Carburetor laid out on a cloth
I want to be present for all of it.
Hand work at the workshop bench
Built by hand.
Welding a metal component
Piece by piece.
03 / THE PEOPLE

This car is not just a result. It is a reason to gather, learn, and grow.

04 / THE JOURNEY

A project like this is not just about the destination. It is about the countless small moments along the way.

05 / THE ASSESSMENT

The assessment is not just mechanical for me. It is emotional too.

A car like this feels like a dimensional work of art. It is not one thing.

Stripped interior and transmission tunnel
Each piece had to be considered.
Steering wheel inside the Z
A growing familiarity.
06 / THE WHOLE

It is hundreds, maybe thousands of individual pieces that may not mean much on their own, but together they create an experience.

Sound, smell, heat, pressure, movement, memory, fear, joy, trust. All of it is connected.

Small metal parts held in a hand
Building pieces, step by step.
Working on the car in the garage
Creating great memories with dear friends.
Work beside the exposed front suspension
Learning by doing.
07 / UNDERSTANDING

I was learning the car as I uncovered it. Each exposed seam, bracket, and patch of metal taught me where to look next and what to watch out for in the future.

08 / SMALL DECISIONS

This rule keeps me accountable because a car is never just the engine, the wheels, the stance, or the interior. It is the combined effect of many small decisions.

Fine mesh on the intake trumpets
Attention in every part.
Front suspension detail
One part finding its place.

If I want the whole car to feel right, I need to care about the small things most people will never see.
